Commercial Sandalwood Essential Oil Distiller

The sapwood of the sandalwood trunk is white and odorless, while the heartwood is yellow-brown and has a strong aroma. It is a valuable spice and medicinal material. Sandalwood essential oil can be extracted from the roots, heartwood and leaves of sandalwood. The essential oil content of sandalwood roots is 6 to 7%, the heartwood essential oil content is 2 to 5%, and the leaf essential oil content is 3 to 4%. Sandalwood essential oil can be used to moisturize aging, dry and dehydrated skin. It can delay aging and reduce wrinkles. It can also relax and calm people, eliminate anxiety, relax nerves, and has the effects of aphrodisiac and improving frigidity.

Sandalwood pretreatment involves breaking the sandalwood into small pieces or powder and soaking it for a period of time.

There are two ways of distillation as follows,

1. Water distillation method

Plants and water are boiled together to form aromatic vapor, which is then condensed to obtain essential oils and hydrosols. The temperature of this method is usually lower than 100°C. Because the temperature and pressure are low, it is suitable for extracting certain flower essential oils, especially those with high market demand for hydrosols, such as roses and orange blossoms. However, this distillation method is very slow and is not suitable for essential oils with high ester content, because esters will change into alcohols and acids during long-term heating. For example, lavender cannot be extracted in this way.

2. Circulating water distillation method

Extraction method specifically used for expensive sandalwood. The process is divided into three stages, and the ratio of sandalwood to water is 1:5. For example, take 500 kilograms of broken sandalwood and mix it with 2500 kilograms of water.

The first stage: slowly distill for 4 hours to get 1/3 of the sandalwood essential oil.

Second stage: Continue distillation for 2 hours, and get another 1/3 amount.

The third stage: Add the sandalwood hydrosol produced in the first two stages of distillation and distill for another 2 to 3 hours.

Because hydrosols contain aromatic molecules, cyclic distillation can condense the molecules and increase the yield of essential oils.
