How To Make Hydrolat And Essential Oil

Many people ask, how are essential oils and hydrolat extracted? What's the difference? Here I will give you a brief introduction.

1. General introduction to essential oils and hydrolat:

Some plants can emit pleasant fragrances, some are distributed throughout the body (such as rosemary), some are flowers (such as roses, lavender, jasmine), some are fruits (such as sweet orange), and some are stems, leaves, and branches. (like lemongrass, sandalwood), or even seeds (like fennel). These plants are called aromatic plants. Whether in the East or the West, aromatic plants have been recognized and utilized by people a long time ago. Most of them are used as medicines, not only for physical and physiological treatment, but also for psychological and emotional regulation.

The reason why various aromatic plants can emit these fragrances is because they contain hundreds of different aromatic components. These aromatic components form complex combinations, have unique functions, and have extremely low content. These aromatic substances are extracted into an oil-like liquid, which is essential oil; and when the essential oil is extracted, there is also a part of water-like liquid that contains various aromatic plant essences other than essential oil, which is hydrosol.

Essential oils and hydrosols have similar effects. The distilled liquid left during the extraction process of essential oils is called hydrosol. You can call it water essential oil. It also contains a very small amount of essential oil molecules. You can probably tell by saying this. The close connection between essential oils and hydrosols. As for essential oil, it is a volatile aromatic molecule present in plants. Essential oil is insoluble in water, while hydrosol is soluble in water.

Hydrosols can come into contact with the skin, while pure essential oils, except for some specific ones (lavender, tea tree), must be diluted with a base oil to act on the skin.

2. Extraction method of essential oil:

Distillation method: is the most commonly used method for extracting essential oils. Put plants into a container and heat them from below to generate steam, allowing the essential oils of the plants to emit with the steam. After the water vapor containing the essential oils is collected and cooled by the tube, the steam will cool into a liquid, and then According to the difference in density and specific gravity between water and essential oils, they are separated. The remaining water is hydrosol. Most essential oils are extracted using this method. For example: chamomile, cinnamon, clary sage, cypress, eucalyptus, geranium, juniper, lavender, lemon balm, orange blossom, patchouli, peppermint, rosemary, sandalwood, tea tree, ylang-ylang.

Some aromatic plants have high oil content, and more essential oils are obtained, such as rosemary, lavender, tea tree, etc.; some plants have very low oil content, and the extraction rate (yield) is very low, so the price is extremely high, such as roses, Jasmine, sandalwood, etc.

Why are they said to be a match made in heaven?

First of all, hydrosol is not an ordinary aqueous solution. It can effectively improve the problem of endocrine disorders in the skin. For example, many people use it as a toner, and you can also use it to mix facial masks. After diluting essential oils with base oil, it can relieve skin inflammation and promote cell metabolism while ensuring safety.

Since you can think of hydrosols as by-products of essential oil distillation, using them together will indeed make the effect better, because there is a certain complementary effect between hydrosols and essential oils (correspondingly), when used in the correct way , will play a better role.

Natural aroma can affect emotions. The sense of smell enters the brain peripheral nerves of the human body and affects the human body's emotions. The combination of essential oils and hydrosol can make the whole product infinitely closer to the aroma of natural plants. This natural plant aroma that can be absorbed by the human body is integrated with the human body and does not interfere with the overall harmony of your body. It can be absorbed and accepted by the body. Over time, your negative emotions will slowly be reduced by the influence of this aroma.
